On Saturday, December 14th, Deep Center hosted the Deep Speaks: Winter Showcase, at Front Porch Improv!

Twice a year, at the end of each semester, Deep’s young authors in the Young Author Project and in Block by Block take to the stage to perform their deepest, bravest, and most vivid writing from the past few weeks of their time in the programs. They then take to the stage to perform their pieces in front of families and friends, showing off how they have been writing creatively, learning deeply, and raising their voices fearlessly.

“Young people who are a part of The Young Author Project and Block by Block are courageously opening themselves up to the transformative power of telling their stories” said Director of Youth Programs, Kalima Harris. “As the adults in the room who support our young people in this process, we are inspired by them and encourage them to fully engage with the process of self-discovery. We use this opportunity to be in community with our village, as we uplift our youth and affirm to them that they are heard, seen, supported, and loved.”

Deep’s Winter Showcase is a time to celebrate bravery as artists, explorers, and agents of change. It is a coming together, not only to hand the youth and adults of our community the microphone—but to build them the whole stage. When we think about creating transformational change, we know very well that the members of our community already have the answers our leaders seek. Our work, then, becomes about lifting up their voices, and sharing that joy with our larger community.
