First, the lowdown: On February 18th, Deep Center’s Action Research Team (ART) is hosting How We Show Up, Show Out: Illuminating Critical Hope, a free youth summit combining youth-led community organizing workshops, a community resource fair, and an art installation centering hope in schools and neighborhoods. Want to learn more about the intersection of power and privilege? Interested in using art or design to create change? Ready to take immediate action for the good of the community? Not sure where to begin, but hoping to meet other like-minded young people? ART’s youth summit is for every young person with an interest in pushing our world from what it is to what it could be, and we want to see you there.
Now, the background: How We Show Up, Show Out is youth-planned, youth-led, and created with youth in mind. That’s pretty rare in the world of youth summits, but at Deep, we never considered doing it any other way. After all, youth are the experts of their own lived experiences. “We are the ones who know and understand what we want to see as a community,” said ART member Ytinu. ART member Harrison agreed: “Often, there are very few spaces for young people to speak their mind without being lectured by an adult. When we provide a space for these young people to speak their mind, they will more likely be open to speaking at all. It gives young people, like myself, a space to discuss issues that we wouldn’t otherwise talk about outside of these spaces.”
Those spaces of safety and community take time to build. ART members, with the assistance of their adult allies, have spent months designing and executing the summit. According to ART member Magnolia, that meant asking a lot of questions: “Who do we believe can showcase the knowledge and power of youth? What resources are local to us? What is the best method for youth outreach for Savannah?” The result of all that hard work is an all-day experience that opens with a plenary delivered by guest youth activists, transitions to workshops in the Learning, Designing, and Action tracks, and closes with a free-flowing exchange of information and resources at the community resource fair. At the fair, community knowledge-holders and summit attendees will learn from each other while surrounded by an art installation created by youth from the community and participants in Deep’s 912 Freedom School.
Deep staff members acting as adult allies in the summit planning process have been reminded again and again of the power of youth organizing. “The youth have their own networks, and their networks have a lot of knowledge. They’re very strong and powerful,” said Assistant Director of Restorative Practices and Culture Sadé Campbell. ART Coordinator Kassie Colón agreed: “When the young people are working on these projects, you’re able to see their minds light up and see what they’re putting into the work, which is really exciting and fruitful.” While staff members have acted as knowledge-sharers and guides in the hard work of planning a large-scale event, it has been the youth who have taken the reins. “This is intergenerational organizing,” Program Manager Megan Ave’Lallemant said. “This process of creating a container and doing our best to not limit the young people is a liberatory practice.”
For ART members, the upcoming summit is a powerful testament to their commitment to and belief in their fellow young people, all of whom have the power to be agents of change and transformation. “I hope attendees will have the ability to learn from their peers and gain the knowledge they need to effect change in their communities,” said Harrison. That’s what a youth summit is all about: breaking down isolation, forging connections between passionate young people who come from different neighborhoods and attend different schools, and creating that magical space where a movement can incubate without the threat of outside resistance. “I hope that attendees will come out of the youth summit with the confidence, resources, and connections to continue youth-led systems change,” Magnolia said.

Ahora, los antecedentes: El evento How We Show Up, Show Out ha sido planeado y dirigido por jóvenes y creado teniendo en cuenta a los jóvenes. Eso es bastante inusual en el mundo de cumbres para jóvenes, pero en Deep jamás consideramos hacerlo de ninguna otra manera. Después de todo, los jóvenes son los expertos sobre sus propias experiencias de vida. “Nosotros somos los que sabemos y comprendemos qué es lo que queremos ver como comunidad”, dijo Ytinu, miembro de ART. Toma tiempo construir estos espacios seguros en comunidad. Los miembros de ART, con la asistencia de sus aliados adultos, han pasado meses diseñando y ejecutando las tareas de la cumbre. De acuerdo a Magnolia, miembro de ART, eso implicó hacer muchas preguntas: “¿Quién creemos que puede destacar el conocimiento y el poder de los jóvenes? ¿Qué recursos son locales para nosotros? ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de hacer trabajo de alcance comunitario para Savannah? El resultado de todo ese trabajo arduo es una experiencia de todo un día que abre con una plenaria a cargo de un grupo de activistas jóvenes invitados, sigue con una serie de talleres sobre aprendizaje, diseño y acción y cierra con un intercambio de información y recursos en la feria de recursos comunitarios. En la feria, las personas con conocimiento de la comunidad y los asistentes a la cumbre aprenderán los unos de los otros y estarán rodeados por una instalación de arte creada por los jóvenes de la comunidad junto con participantes de la 912 Freedom School [Escuela de la Libertad 912] de Deep.
Los miembros del personal de Deep que se desempeñan como aliados adultos en el proceso de planificación de la cumbre han presenciado una y otra vez el poder del trabajo organizativo de los jóvenes. “Los jóvenes tienen sus propias redes, y estas redes tienen mucho conocimiento. Si bien estos miembros del personal han servido como guías y han compartido el conocimiento y el trabajo duro que involucra planificar un evento a gran escala, han sido los jóvenes quienes han tomado las riendas. “Esto es organización intergeneracional”, dijo la gerente de Programas Megan Ave’Lallemant. “Este proceso de crear un espacio para hacer lo posible para no limitar a los jóvenes es una práctica liberadora”.
Para los jóvenes miembros de ART, la cumbre a celebrarse es un testimonio a su compromiso y convicción en sus compañeros, todos los cuales tienen el poder de ser agentes de cambio y transformación. “Tengo la esperanza que los asistentes tengan la capacidad de aprender y obtener el conocimiento que necesitan para conseguir cambios en sus comunidades”, dijo Harrison. De eso se trata la cumbre para jóvenes: desmantelar el aislamiento, forjar conexiones entre personas jóvenes apasionadas que vienen de diferentes vecindarios y asisten a escuelas distintas, y crear ese espacio mágico en donde un movimiento puede incubarse sin la amenaza de la resistencia exterior. “Espero que los asistentes salgan de la cumbre juvenil con la confianza, recursos y conexiones necesarias para continuar con el trabajo de cambio de los sistemas sociales liderado por jóvenes”, dijo Magnolia.
