The last semester of the Young Author Project was different, to say the least. After finishing the tail end of our Spring 2020 semester virtually, we knew that the fall was going to be something entirely new. After thinking and dreaming of all the possibilities, we decided to have our first ever entirely virtual semester.
The semester wasn’t without challenges, but don’t let us keep our successes on mute! We managed to create a new kind of space, one where we could unleash our creativity and connect with each other. Our latest anthology is bursting with the sum total of all of that dreaming, creativity, and fun.
Much of the joy and excitement for this semester was orchestrated by our previous program manager, Maria Zoccola. She was at the center of the Young Author Project for many years—creating, editing, dreaming and doing—but, sadly, this past semester was her last with us. Maria has moved on to new adventures, and while we’re sad to see her go, we know that she will keep Deep and the work she did here close to her heart.
But the team was not left incomplete. We are happy to welcome Inés Rodriguez as the new Program Manager for the Young Author Project. We know that they will bring as much care and joy to the program as Maria did as we move forward to new semesters.
As the semester drew to a close, this new team began to think about how to take Deep Speaks to our young people.
So, how does one celebrate the end-of-semester anthology publication while still remaining cognitive of safety measures? The answer was simple: a three-week filming schedule in various locations around Savannah, which replaced our traditional Yamacraw Performing Arts Center stage show.Through filming, our young people were able to appreciate their written work in new ways through reciting their sections of the books. We had over 35 young people, Ed Fellows, Writing Fellows, and Staff Members contribute to a short film that features pieces about joyous occasions, fictional lands of wonder, and captivating autobiographical presentations.
The videographer mastermind working technical magic behind the scenes is Jason Chapman. Jason has taken our young people’s works of art off of the paper and presented them through an incredibly beautiful lens. We urge you to take a look and see for yourself! We are so proud of our young people and what they have accomplished—this semester and every semester. They astound us every day!
Just a semester ago, we created Deep Speaks through recorded messages on Zoom or Google Meets, and now we are able to focus our efforts on slowly transitioning our young people into new in-person programming. The Young Author Project has been through a mass of transformations recently, and with this, we have welcomed a social activist and social worker, Inés Rodriguez, who will help us to lead the charge in the transformation of the program. We can’t wait for you to view the talented work of our young people this semester!

El Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores Celebra el semestre de Otoño 2020 con el video de Deep Speaks

El semestre pasado del Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores fue muy diferente. Después de terminar las últimas semanas de nuestro semestre de Primavera 2020 de manera virtual, sabíamos que el Otoño sería algo completamente nuevo. Luego de soñar sobre todas las posibilidades, decidimos tener nuestro primer semestre virtual.
El semestre no fue sin ningún problema, pero no nos dejó mantener nuestres éxitos en silencio. Logramos crear un nuevo tipo de espacio, donde podíamos ser creatives y conectarnos entre nosotres. Nuestra última antología está repleta de todos esos sueños, creatividad y diversión.
La mayoría de la alegría y emoción por este semestre fue orquestada por nuestre previa Gerente de Programas, Maria Zoccola. Ella estuvo en el centro del Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores por muchos años – creando, editando, soñando y realizando, pero tristemente, este semestre pasado fue el último semestre que ella dirigió con nosotres y ha dejado a Deep por nuevas aventuras. Mientras estamos muy tristes de verla ir, sabemos que llevará su tiempo con Deep en su corazón.
Sin embargo, nuestre equipo no quedó incompleto. Estamos muy felices de darle la bienvenida a Inés Rodriguez como le nueve Gerente de Programas del Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores. Sabemos que elle traerá la misma alegría y cuidado al programa, como lo hizo Maria, mientras avanzamos a nuevos semestres.
A medida que el semestre se acercaba a su fin, fue con este nuevo equipo que comenzamos a pensar en cómo llevar Deep Speaks a nuestres jóvenes.
Entonces, ¿cómo celebramos la publicación de nuestre antología de fin de semestre mientras seguimos conscientes de las medidas de seguridad por el COVID? La respuesta es simple, un horario de filmación de tres semanas en varias ubicaciones en Savannah reemplazaron nuestre show tradicional en el Yamacraw Performing Arts Center. A través de la filmación, nuestres jóvenes pudieron apreciar su trabajo en nuevas maneras mientras recitaban su sección de los libros. Más de 35 jóvenes, Instructores de Escritura y Educación, y miembros del personal, contribuyeron a una película corta que presenta historias de ocasiones felices, tierras ficticias de maravillas y presentaciones autobiográficas que sacan al escritor en cualquiera.
La mente maestra detrás de la cámara es Jason Chapman. Jason ha tomado las historias de nuestres jóvenes y las ha presentado a través de un lente increíblemente hermoso. ¡Le insistimos a que lo vea y lo compruebe usted mismo! Estamos muy orgulloses de nuestros jóvenes y de lo que han logrado, este semestre y cada semestre elles nos asombran todos los días.
Solo hace un semestre, creamos Deep Speaks por medio de grabaciones en Zoom o Google Meets y ahora somos capaces de enfocar nuestres esfuerzos en la transición de nuestres jóvenes a la nueva programación en persona. El Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores ha pasado por muchas transiciones recientemente y con esto, hemos dado la bienvenida a une activiste social y trabajadore social, Inés Rodríguez, quien nos ayudará a liderar la carga en la transformación del programa. ¡Ya no aguantamos las ganas de mostrarles el trabajo de nuestres talentoses jóvenes este semestre!
