Savannah Morning News writer Will Peebles has written a feature on our Deep Speaks event and Deep Laureates for spring 2018.
Each spring and fall, Deep’s students vote on the vividness, originality and fearlessness of their peers’ writing. The four authors with the most votes become finalists for Deep Laureate. Then, the Deep community votes so Deep staffers can determine the Laureate for that semester.
The spring 2018 Deep Laureate finalists were Madeleine Pelli of Garrison School for the Arts, Dekevian George of Oglethorpe Charter School, Charles Ryans of Godley Station School and Rachel Whitehead of Isle of Hope School.
Usually, the honor is given to one young author, but this year, Rachel Whitehead and Madeleine Pelli were both named Deep Laureate.
Whitehead has been in Deep for a year.
“I’m really thankful that I gained a lot of experience with writing with fellow students, laughing and having fun while doing something I love.”
